Sunday, Day 1—MARSEILLAN
Passengers are met by the Captain at 4pm at The Metropole Hotel in Montpellier. Transfer to Anjodi, moored in the port of Homps. Champagne welcome followed by time to relax or take a stroll along the footpath or into the village, before dinner on board. Monday, Day 2— HOMPS TO LE SOMAIL Fascinating morning tour of Carcassonne. Dating back to the Gallo-Roman era, this is the most complete mediaeval fortified city in existence today. With its 52 watchtowers, portcullis and extraordinary repertoire of defenses, which resisted the many armies that tried to storm this glorious Camelot setting. Afternoon cruise along the 330 year old Midi canal to the delightful village of Le Somail through vineyards and pine trees. Dinner aboard. Tuesday, Day 3—LE SOMAIL TO CAPESTANG Enjoy a morning cruise along the historic Midi canal to Argeliers. This afternoon's excursion is to Minerve, the ancient capital of the Minervois, which boasts a 12th century Cathar fort surrounded by deep limestone gorges. Besieged by Simon de Montfort in 1215, its hilltop location affords spectacular views. A fascinating recreation in miniature of the bloodthirsty Cathar rebellion and small museum complete this intriguing picture. Lunch ashore in a local auberge. Twilight cruise along arguably the most picturesque stretch of canal scenery in France to Capestang, where we moor near the old stone bridge, a perfect setting for evening cocktails and dinner aboard. Wednesday, Day 4—CAPESTANG TO BEZIERS Today's excursion is to Narbonne, a Roman Mediterranean capital where the Visigoth monarchs once lived. Enjoy a visit to the Archbishop's Palace and Horreum. Explore the indoor market at the hub of this bustling canal side town, where you will have time to shop or simply absorb the relaxed atmosphere. After an afternoon cruise to Beziers via the world’s oldest canal tunnel at Malpas, walk ashore to Domaine de Guery for a pre-dinner wine tasting of the full-bodied Corbieres at this 500 year old vineyard. Dinner aboard. Thursday, Day 5—BEZIERS TO AGDE A morning visit to Beziers' 13th century fortified cathedral of Saint Nazaire, with a commanding view across to the Pyrenees Mountains. Explore l'Oppidum D'Enserune, a pre-Roman hilltop settlement with Greek and Iberian excavations dating from 600 BC. Descend the 7 lock flight of Fonserannes and cross the aqueduct over the River Orb before cruising down to the Mediterranean town of Agde in the afternoon. Dinner aboard. Friday, Day 6—AGDE TO MARSEILLAN After a chance to explore the winding mediaeval streets of the old Greco/Phoenician fishing port of Agde, Anjodi sets off through the famous round lock, before heading out onto the inland saltwater lake of Thau, past the Oyster beds. After mooring in the fishing village of Marseillan, we stroll around the port and tour the unique 'Vermoutherie' of Noilly Prat, with a tasting. Optional pre-dinner dip in the Mediterranean! Captain’s Farewell Dinner aboard. Saturday, Day 7—MARSEILLAN TO BEZIERS After breakfast depart Marseillan by minibus and return to Montpellier by about 11am NOTE: These are sample itineraries and are subject to change. On alternate weeks, cruises will be in the reverse direction.
Guests are met at 16:00hrs (4pm) at the Hotel Metropole, Montpellier and transferred in the ships minibus to Anjodi, moored in the shadow of the Cathedral of Agde, champagne welcome and dinner on board. Monday After a chance to explore the winding streets of the old Greco/Phoenecian fishing port of Agde the barge sets off along the 300 year old Canal du Midi, through the famous round lock, before heading out onto the inland lake of Thau, where we berth in the fishing village of Marseillan. After mooring we stroll over to, and tour the unique 'Vermoutherie' of Noilly Prat, with a tasting before our dinner on board. Tuesday We cruise down the length of the lake to the oyster growing hamlet of Bouzigues, then after a visit to the exhibition explaining the shellfish raising culture of the lake, we drive to and tour the Cistercian Abbey of Valmagne with its award winning wines. Dinner on board. Wednesday We start early to catch the opening of the lift bridge at Frontignan and cruise the Canal du Rhone a Sete today, passing the pink flamingoes and the white horses, of the Camargue National Park. We moor in the ancient walled city of Aigues Mortes, and climb the 12th century defensive Tower of Constance. Our more energetic guests may wish to walk the one mile circumference of the town on the parapet of its walls. Dinner is taken onshore in 'Les Arcades', specializing in dishes of the Camargue. Thursday We make an early start, and after passing several herds of the wild black bulls, we join the Petit Rhone river which we follow to our nights stop at Arles. We then explore the Arena, St. Trophime’s basilica and the Museum of Provencal life on foot though the pedestrianized heart of this old capital, Camargue. Dinner on board. Friday We cruise up the Rhone River itself, passing the immense citadel of King René at Tarascon before mooring under the walls of Avignon and climbing the many steps to the Rocher des Doms, the Papal gardens attached to the Palais des Papes, which we then tour, a massive monument to the era of the 'Other Rome’, when the popes moved to France. After a stroll though the vibrant shopping district of Avignon, return to the barge for the Captains Dinner. Saturday Leave the barge for Avignon railway station or hotel by minibus after breakfast.
