Itinerary

Vandenesse to Dijon (or reverse), cruising on the Burgundy Canal

Cruise route map
Sunday
Vandenesse
Board the barge at Vandenesse for your cruise through Burgundy. A champagne reception welcomes you on board and gives you a chance to meet the crew. Later that evening enjoy your first dining experience on board.

Monday
Cruise to Pont d'Ouche. Visit Château de Pommard
After breakfast, enjoy your first day cruising on the magnificent Canal de Bourgogne. Small-unspoiled villages and green, forested hills provide exceptional views from the deck. There are plenty of opportunities to walk and cycle alongside the boat on the tow path that follows the canal for the entire cruise.
After lunch visit Château de Pommard, a stunning building dating from 1726 and surrounded by its own vineyards. You have the chance to visit its exceptional cellar and sample its wines, followed by a very scenic drive back to the barge in time for cocktails.

Tuesday
Cruise to La Bussière-sur-Ouche. Visit Beaune
Relax on-board this morning as the barge cruises towards the charming village of La Bussière. After lunch, visit Beaune, capital of the Burgundy wine producing region, for a visit to the famous Hotel-Dieu, a magnificent 15th century charity hospital. The town itself has hardly changed in appearance throughout the years; its tiny centre is a dense maze of narrow old streets with a circular boulevard running round it's former ramparts, many of which still stand.
Tonight's mooring is at another canal-side village, La Bussière-sur-Ouche.

A beautiful morning cruise to Gissey is followed by a short drive to visit the Abbaye de la Bussière, built in the 12th century under the guidance of the Cistercian monks from Citeaux. This beautiful abbey has now been converted into a truly luxurious hotel. After a stroll in the grounds and a short tour of the property , enjoy lunch in the restaurant.
This afternoon, visit Châteauneuf-en-Auxois, a medieval hill-top village with commanding views over the plains, followed by a tour of the lovely countryside.

Thursday
Cruise to Fleurey-sur-Ouche. Visit Clos de Vougeot
This morning the barge cruises towards the Côte d'Or, planted with vines that produce some of the world's most famous wines. After lunch your guide takes you to visit 'Clos de Vougeot', a medieval château surrounded by vineyards. This is the headquarters of the Chevaliers du Tastevin, the celebrated Burgundian wine society and we can still see the ancient presses used by the Cistercian monks.
On your way back to the barge, enjoy a wine tasting in Vougeot. Tonight's mooring is in the pretty village of Fleurey-sur-Ouche.

Friday

Wednesday
Cruise to St Jean de Losne. Visit Beaune
A somewhat different cruising experience today, through the lovely valley of the River Saône to the town of Verdun sur Doubs. Lunch is taken in the heart of Beaune at the restaurant Loiseau des Vignes. We then visit this wonderful town to see the famous Hotel-Dieu, Hospices de Beaune, followed by a wine tasting. The town itself has hardly changed in appearance throughout the years; it's tiny centre is a dense maze of narrow old streets with a circular boulevard running round it's former ramparts, many of which still stand.
Tonight's mooring is at St Jean de Losne, the barging capital of France. Take some time to stroll around the ports and see the many working barges and house boats that are moored here.

Thursday
Cruise to Longecourt. Visit Château de Longecourt
This morning the barge leaves the river and enters the Burgundy Canal. Enjoy the chance to walk or cycle along the towpath. After a wonderful lunch on board we visit the stunning Château de Longecourt, owned by the same family since 1630. Rejoin the barge in the countryside near Longecourt, the overnight mooring.

Friday
Cruise to Dijon. Visit Dijon
Today your guide takes you on a walking tour of Dijon to visit the market, Ducal Palace, the Grey Poupon mustard shop and enjoy some shopping at the covered food market.
Tonight, the barge moors in the port of Dijon. As the chef prepares for your Farewell gala dinner on board, perhaps try a 'Kir' aperitif; a cocktail which mixes the locally produced Cassis blackcurrant liqueur with the area's Aligoté white wine.

Saturday
Dijon
After breakfast disembark the barge for your onward journey.

PLEASE NOTE— This is a sample itinerary and is subject to change without notice. The cruise runs in the reverse direction on alternate weeks.
