The Tortue Barge

La Tortue is owned and operated by lovely English couple Peter and Sally Shaw, and is available for charter parties of up to six people or individual cabin bookings on selected weeks (please ask us). It is a very popular traditional Dutch barge, built in 1895, but now fully equipped with very pleasant, modern facilities. Peter is an experienced gourmet chef (he has even written a cook book!) and through his vast knowledge of the wines, cheeses and local produce of the region he will guide you through a wonderful gastronomic experience. Daily proposed excursions take you to interesting and colourful local sites including abbeys, mediaeval villages and the ancient Roman town of Narbonne. Or, if preferred, there are varied walks and bicycle tours for the more energetic. La Tortue offers a wide range of cruise themes in addition to the favourite ‘classic’ cruise…from specialist wine tours to golf tours…from bird watching cruises to family holidays.
Her three attractive bedrooms all have pretty, tiled en-suite bathrooms. The delightful saloon - finished in hand rubbed teak - is equipped with big windows, two large comfortable sofas, a refined dining area, well-stocked drinks cabinet, CD player, books and games, and imparts a warm and inviting atmosphere. In addition to the very comfortable interior, La Tortue boasts a large mahogany sun deck which affords uninterrupted views all round. There are teak tables and chairs with comfortable cushions, recliners, a teak bench, planters full of colorful flowers and herbs, and an attractive canopy that gives shade when needed.
In 2008 she will offer her very special ‘Connoisseur Wine Cruises’ for charter groups who wish to explore and savour the wine-production in this area and enjoy more tastings than are offered on the usual ‘Classic’ cruise. Please click here for full details and see below for prices.
